William Elder, RXR EVP, Managing Director of New York City Division, walked ABC7 through the rooftop green space at RXR’s Pier 57 as part of ABC7’s segment on eco-friendly buildings. Pier 57’s two-and-a-half-acre rooftop green space is more than just pretty foliage and finely manicured lawns – the rooftop greenery insulates the building, absorbs rainwater during storms and helps treat dirty air. Uniquely, it combats the urban heat island effect.
“It’s an environmentally friendly roof,” said Elder of Pier 57’s rooftop. “This is an adaptive reuse building. The structure that was already here was never taken down, it was just repurposed.”
