In honor of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Scott Rechler, RXR Chairman and CEO and Trustee and Vice Chair of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, joined CNBC’s “Squawk Box” to reflect on the September 11 attacks, the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan and the future of New York City in the years since the tragedy.
“On September 11th, strangers were no longer strangers, said Rechler. “We came together as a community. It’s such a symbolic moment in time and a lesson that when we’re facing challenges, particularly in New York, people come together. That day, you had moral clarity. Terrorism killed 3,000 innocent people who started their day thinking they were just going to work. Then you had the heroism of the first responders, just doing what they do, not thinking twice about it. And then you had September 12th, when we all came together as a city and said, ‘We’re not going to be beaten by this. We’re going to rebuild, find a way to build back better and stronger, and be there for each other as a community.’ That power of community and the positivity around it is really what drove us through the worst of those days and, ultimately, rebuilding Lower Manhattan and giving our city this next sense of life.”
